The Forman Center was re-dedicated in 1999 as the Lucy W. and Charles R. Forman Center, reflecting the contributions of Dr. Forman and his wife, Lucille Watson Forman. Dr. Forman, a veterinarian, school board member, and a member of one of Broward's pioneer families, was a staunch supporter of educational issues in Broward and was influential in the growth and development of Broward Community College.

On August 24, 1977, South Campus opened its doors to about 700 students. Classes were held at the First United Methodist Church in Hollywood. On June 3, 1979, ground was broken for the first permanent facility on the North Perry Airport property. The building, later named Sheldon J. Schlesinger Hall, contained classrooms, student services facilities, and faculty and administration offices, and was ready for the start of fall classes in 1980.

The contentious, unsettled conditions at the college prompted Emil Buehler, a German-born aviator, architect, inventor, and philanthropist, to threaten to withdraw his support from the aviation program for which he had provided the planes and classroom space for at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. "He never did, though," said trustee John H. Payne. "He never would have done anything to hurt the college."

Gene Whiddon, who was also president of Causeway Lumber Co., served as chairman of the BCC Foundation through his death in 1989. The men's baseball teams flourished under the direction of coach Leroy Wheat. The program sent many players to college teams and also produced several players who reached the major leagues, including Craig Skok and Don Newhowser. Until a diamond was built on Central Campus, the team practiced at New River Middle school and played its games at Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale.
