She got her General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and went to BCC, where she attained honors. She went on to receive her bachelor's and master's degrees and was named recipient of a LeRoy Collins Distinguished Alumni Award in 1990. Hardy returned to BCC to work as a counselor on North Campus. Chester Handleman was a congenial yet cerebral history and political science professor who was loved by his students, respected by his colleagues, and active in many facets of college life. Educated at Clark College, Massachusetts State, and Nova University, Dr. Handleman was a widely published expert in the areas of international relations and national politics. He was a member of the faculty from 1961 until his sudden death while on sabbatical at Durham, North Carolina.
